This project was a process exploration, and I chose to research the process and history of mosaic making, since that is what I already mainly do in my work.
I then began making sketches of what exactly I wanted to create. Ferns have been on my mind a good deal lately: my mom planted them all the way around the fence of our backyard at our house. I chose to create a leaf of one of these ferns.
After sketching, I started to draw the form with paint markers onto a panel. This mainly acts as the underneath for the LEGO and tile.
I also began gathering supplies. Since I already had a great deal of LEGO bricks and pieces, I bought some tiles and broke them up with a hammer to get small unique pieces that I could mosaic with.
I then started to paste all my pieces onto the panel, first with the LEGO so that I could get the subject of the work first, then with the tile pieces to fill in where there was no LEGO.
Finally, I filled in all the LEGO and tile pieces, and the mosaic was done.
